Pretty funny stuff from Canadian cartoonist Kate Beaton.

Also, her comics based off Nancy Drew covers are awesome.

  Happy Canada Day

Have fun, everyone!

Who is Rob Ford, you ask? He's currently the frontrunner in Toronto's mayoral race.

He has complained about city spending on AIDS prevention, claiming that only homosexuals and drug users are at serious risk of getting AIDS. He says he supports the views of a right-wing pastor who thinks that same-sex marriage will "dismantle" civilization. He has called Asian people "Orientals" and suggested that they are taking over, then when rebuked explained that he thought this was a positive thing. He has suggested that Toronto cannot handle any more immigrants and that in a "perfect world" Toronto's population would remain even.

I like that they mention the RCMP. We knew they were badass.

If you commit a crime in Canada and try to evade the Mounties by slipping over into the States, then you've fundamentally misunderstood the power of the Mounties. They can just gallop over the border and shoot you in Maine, because they have international jurisdiction. Not to mention their paramilitary hoard of weaponry and vehicles including trucks, snowmobiles, aircraft, sea vessels and a goddamn train.

It's not often you see two guys you know on the front page of the newspaper. Apparently, Michael Walchuk is fighting tomorrow, and he's got a shot at becoming Waterloo Region's first Canadian pro boxing title holder since Fitz Vanderpool in 1996.

After a fling with pro fighting, a discouraged Walchuk walked away from the sport for a couple years.

Then one day, he landed on the doorstep of Keith Vanderpool's youngest brother in Kitchener in search of a trainer.

Longtime friends, Walchuk was once Syd Vanderpool's sparring partner.

"I could've approached him a couple years ago about working together, but Michael wasn't ready," said Syd, a former world middleweight champ. - Sports - The Second Chance Kid: Walchuk takes a shot at Canadian title

RIP Corey. Died from an apparent drug overdose.

Wait, did I get that right?

There. Much better.

Ah, I kid. Comedy: it's tragedy plus time.

It sounds like he was having a tough time with drugs for a while now. A quote from Haim in his Wikipedia article:

"I started on the downers which were a hell of a lot better than the uppers because I was a nervous wreck. But one led to two, two led to four, four led to eight, until at the end it was about 85 a day -- the doctors could not believe I was taking that much. And that was just the Valium -- I'm not talking about the other pills I went through".

  Reel Toronto

A cool list of films that were filmed in Toronto (though taking place in many different cities, from San Francisco, Detroit, Chicago, to Los Angeles and New York).

Included is one of my favourite holiday movies, A Christmas Story:

When all goes wrong, the family does a Christmas dinner at the local Chinese restaurant. In this case, it's the former Chop Suey Palace at 744 Gerrard, now home to Batifole. You can see what the frontage looks like these days at their website.

Basically, all the film's interiors were were shot at 793 Pharmacy Avenue, once home to Magder studios. SCTV was among the other tenants there.

Woooo Canada. Take that, Ireland!

The top ten countries listed on the index are: Norway, Australia, Iceland, Canada, Ireland, the Netherlands, Sweden, France, Switzerland and Japan.

The United States ranks 13th, down one spot from last year.

Ruh-roh! Looks like kudzu has finally come to Canada. How bad is it? You can actually watch it grow:

The patch of kudzu vine was found on a bluff overlooking Lake Erie in Leamington, Ont., a farming community about 30 kilometres southeast of Windsor.

It measures 120 metres by 50 metres and is "pretty well established" but contained, according to Rachel Gagnon, a co-ordinator with the Ontario Invasive Plant Council (OIPC).

"There's a possibility to control that spot before it starts spreading into new areas," Gagnon said.

If not destroyed immediately, the plant could wind up costing "millions of dollars to eradicate," said Rowan Sage, a biology professor at the University of Toronto, who began studying kudzu 20 years ago.

  CBC: The Amazing Internet

A cute video from the late 1980s about this revolution called "Internet". Seems like parody today, but I guess this is what it was like back then.

  Canada appears healthy.

Oh, shucks. Stop already.

Zakaria: The Canadian Solution | Newsweek Voices - Fareed Zakaria |

Guess which country, alone in the industrialized world, has not faced a single bank failure, calls for bailouts or government intervention in the financial or mortgage sectors. Yup, it's Canada. In 2008, the World Economic Forum ranked Canada's banking system the healthiest in the world. America's ranked 40th, Britain's 44th.

Canada has done more than survive this financial crisis. The country is positively thriving in it. Canadian banks are well capitalized and poised to take advantage of opportunities that American and European banks cannot seize. The Toronto Dominion Bank, for example, was the 15th-largest bank in North America one year ago. Now it is the fifth-largest. It hasn't grown in size; the others have all shrunk.

I always felt a little more belonging up here. Now, if it were only a little warmer.

Almost a quarter of Canadians don't believe in any god, new poll says

Fewer than three-quarters of Canadians believe in a god, suggests a new Canadian Press Harris-Decima survey.

"Religion in Canada today is not a particularly divisive subject and tolerance levels for different beliefs are high," said Harris-Decima president Bruce Anderson. "This is evident in the fact that one in four people feel comfortable saying they do not believe in a god."

The poll found 72 per cent of respondents said they believed in a god, while 23 per cent said they did not believe in any god. Six per cent did not offer an opinion.

Polls have told a different story in the United States.

"Canada's secularism stands in clearer distinction, when compared to the cultural and political influences of religion in the United States," said Anderson. "In one Harris Interactive study in the United States, conducted in 2007, the number who said they were non-believers was only eight per cent."
